About Us
David founded Musicians Beyond Barlines (MBBL) in August 2020 and serves as its President. MBBL focuses on spreading joy through music and, ultimately, fundraising for the Canuck Place Children's Hospice, a care facility for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Since MBBL's founding, it has utilised numerous platforms to teach younger musicians to achieve this fundraising goal. MBBL continues to offer one-on-one tutoring and group camp programs named Kids for Kids; it has hosted two iterations of each form. Additionally, MBBL has live-streamed a charity concert in conjunction with Bright Orange Music Studio. MBBL operates a podcast system as well with topics ranging from musical eras to specific compositions.
In July 2021, MBBL registered as a not-for-profit organisation (charity) with BC Societies under the name Musicians Beyond Barlines Society.
Events and Programs
Kids for Kids Camps
MBBL has hosted two iterations of Kids for Kids camps: 2020 Winter, and 2021 Summer. Participants were immersed in topics that ranged from broad music history stories, to jazz theory and improvisation, to technique and rhythm training.
Podcasts
MBBL operates a theme-based podcast system. Each podcast falls into a category including musical eras, compositions, history, and comparative music. MBBL hopes to spread the power of music even when its camps are not in session.
Kids for Kids Tutoring
Complementing the Kids for Kids camps programs, one-on-one tutoring has been offered, too. Executive members of MBBL have been paired with a registrant as the tutors helped students dive into specific repertoire and/or theory.
Charity Concerts
To offer its members and any aspiring musicians chances to perform, MBBL has co-hosted numerous charity concerts and recitals, all of which were livestreamed to better spread the club's mission of bringing music's joyous character to everyone.
Master Workshops
MBBL has invited numerous masters to host music workshops. Professionals have also helped adjudicate performances for MBBL's inaugural Kids for Kids competition. Masters who have participated include Steinway Artist John Stetch.
Kids for Kids Competition
Following the first Kids for Kids tutoring program, MBBL organised an encouraging piano competition for aspiring, young musicians to harness participants' inner talents. Professional teachers were invited to aid in adjudication.
Mission
Musicians Beyond Barlines Society strives to spread the university strength, beauty, and joyous nature of music and act as its local apostles. To achieve such a goal, MBBL organises events to fundraise for the Canuck Place Children's Hospice.
